Band of the day: Nonentities (Philippines)
Oooh, this is goood...! I just stumbled over this article:
https://uniteasia.org/punk-band-nonentities-release-haunting-new-track-erase-day-philippines/
and now i'm flashed!
*Very* nice emotional hardcorepunk, also reminds me of some of the great bands of the 90's...
Check out the latest song in the link above!
If you "need" more afterwards, go to their Bandcamp site and/or youtube channel to get an even bigger fix :-D :

dafuq?!? of the day: o'summer vacation
yesterday i stumbled over this music video:
o'summer vacation - HOMMAGE [Official Music Video]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0Dz8bxe9hk

and today i'm totally stunned by this live session:
o'summer vacation - Live for PRFBBQ Thundersnow 2021 (virtual)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNMZxVl_msw

Not sure how to describe this, jazzy mathpunk? They're calling it (summarized) "progressive noise pop". At least this should give an impression...
Their debut album releases June 24, 2021, see https://osummervacation.bandcamp.com/album/wicked-heart-2

dafuq?!? of the day: Doodeskader
Some kind of mixture between sludgy Grunge and Doom played by only two guys from Belgium.
If you know Amenra - "half of the band" is also playling there ^^.
Self-referencing their sound as "in the same realms as Code Orange, Death Grips" (and more) should give a good enough impression about what to expect.

Doodseskader - "Spiritual Punishment" Live Stream
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdzYOaKoHTc&list=PLZNVqgSsmymrxA0SW6TcdfN4sby4eaHl5&index=1

In February there was a two song set for StuBru which was also already blowing away:
#ikluisterbelgisch: Doodseskader ? Meat Suit / Illusion Of Self

dafuq?!? of the day: How fucking great are 'Circus Trees'??!?
Known before, but hearing/seeing "Circus Trees::Live in the Five By Two Studio" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZYYgeY_Nh4 it's about time to tell the world how irrationally fantastic this band is, in a special posting!
This might be the youngest band (from musicians' ages) ever featured here (not sure about Color Killer, but let's not split hairs ^^)
And as descriptions are hard, let's just cite the band's self-description from https://circustrees.bandcamp.com :
"We make music that doesn?t fit with our age, our gender, our living conditions; we are young, we are sisters, we spend our lives in the wastelands of suburbia.
Our songs are of pain, sadness, loss; our music drones, grinds, floats. We make this for us, and only us, but revel in the joy of sharing this with those who get it, feel it, are touched by it."

Albums Of The Week:

2020Releases:

Spanish Love Songs - Brave Faces Everyone
https://www.visions.de/platten/29382/spanish-love-songs-brave-faces-everyone
listen: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYQhPJrQIlgPmB3cXhHKVzVkIuVc057GF
took a bit for me to get into, but when "Kick" (the first preview single of this album) "kicked in" i was finally caught. And it didn't stop until the end of the album, even "Losers, Pt.2" (which i was a bit disappointed about when i heard it first) is great! just start the album and set it to repeat... ^^

Envy - The Fallen Crimson
https://www.awayfromlife.com/envy-the-fallen-crimson-review-2020/
https://www.visions.de/platten/29179/envy-the-fallen-crimson
listen: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lhYRZ9rInL0ruMdwf-qp1z5obAyO_VWJU
is there any way this could *not* be listed as aotw?!? finest post-hardcore/-metal/-rock, with sparkles of punk, dreampop and whatnot. This will take a few runs to sink in. So, basically: just as expected ^^

Giver - Sculpture Of Violence
https://www.awayfromlife.com/giver-sculpture-of-violence-review-2020/

Modern/metallic post hardcore from cologne (mostly ^^). Fantastic stuff! I already liked the preview songs very much, and the full album still manages to exceeed my expectations! Just "wow!" for now... ;-)

Older Releases:

Tequila & The Sunrise Gang - Of Pals & Hearts
listen: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lzhij-rzhgEdwk3BL8b0mLP39C7mefEnk
This one's already a bit "old" (2018) but i just recently discovered them. And now that i finally listended to the full Album i'm astonished! Basically Skapunk/Reggae but soo far from being limited to these styles. Some parts remind of the Bosstones, others of Sublime, a "Polka" part can also be found and hell, there's even a RATM-style part! A new album is announced for this year and after listening to this one i'm already really excited!

Also worth mentioning:

2020Releases:

Green Day - Father of All Motherfuckers
https://www.visions.de/platten/28938/green-day-father-of-all-motherfuckers
https://krachfink.de/green-day-father-of-all-review/
listen: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lTZkF634yieC7jy0R9w2XHN9jUZ6fw6ls
Interesting: when i listened to this album first i was astonished about the hit density and a few days later i'm nearly back to "hmm, okay, just another Green Day Album i don't really care about!". I guess i need to be really in the mood for this kind of pop-punk, and also need to (kind of ^^) "suppress" all the stuff that the name "Green Day" already implies (and probably remove the Label "Punk" completely?!?). Nevertheless, the song writing is still pretty good, these guys definitely know what they're doing!

Blutbad - Alcohodyssey
https://rocknloadmag.com/news/blutbad-alcohodyssey-album-review/
http://theobelisk.net/obelisk/2019/11/08/blutbad-alcohodyssey-release/
listen: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kCBdI780zOPLNk419E6_PYE7xZ9vaack8
Hard to describe as each song is different stilisticly. Definitely roots in Rock'n'Roll, Punk, Heavy-/Stoner Rock...! Great stuff!

The Hellfreaks - God On The Run
info/source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDZ64ZlXTzM
listen: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kScqlAxcbyLP_z4DYIsYEGJKQFg2eA3tg
Punk Rock / Modern Hard Rock / Psychobilly (assigned genres i found, in descending order from my pov) from Hungary.
Very nice straight forward, sometimes a bit poppy, i like it!

Barrels - s/t
https://www.awayfromlife.com/barrels-s-t-review-2020/
listen: https://barrels1.bandcamp.com/album/s-t
AFL describes this simply as "Rock", which is correct somehow but on the other hand - what is *not* Rock when it's posted here ^^?!? So i rather go with the self descripition: "mix of noise, punk, hardcore, emo, and indie", which hits it quite well. 5 Track EP, approx. 30 minutes. I especially like the two songs i knew before, so there's much potential!

Oiro - Mahnstufe X
https://www.awayfromlife.com/oiro-mahnstufe-x-review-2020/
https://krachfink.de/oiro-mahnstufe-x-review/
listen: https://oiro.bandcamp.com/album/mahnstufe-x
(A bit) wavy Postpunk meets Indie from Düsseldorf! Couldn't focus much on the lyrics, so this aspect needs to be left out mostly. Musically also pretty diverse, although mostly slow/midtempo. Definitely worth your time!

HABITAR LA MAR - Comedia Yoica
listen: https://habitarlamar.bandcamp.com/album/comedia-yoica
Spanish post-hardcore. a little "darker"/noisy than e.g. Viva Belgrado. Heavy stuff!

Older Releases:

BRUECKEN - Schall und Raum

I'd call it "street punk" - but the good kind ^^), very hymnic. Although this usually isn't my preferred style of music i recommend this record heavily! Hits only!

older releases:

Drei Affen - Seguimos Ciegxs

Epic Neo-Crust / Screamo / Post-Hardcore from Spain, tearing everything apart! These six tracks blow you away, especially when listening to them on a monday morning to wake up ;-)! Fantastic stuff!

Oh wow! How could this be catergorized? Garagerock and Grunge meet Post-Hardcore?!? Pretty hectic, maybe that's already "mathy"(?), many breaks but still catchy refrains, something's always going on here. Definitely worth more than one listen ^^

Also worth mentioning:

2020releases:

scratchpack - I Love You To The Moon And Back
listen: https://scratchpack.bandcamp.com/album/i-love-you-to-the-moon-and-back
Oh, Grunge is still around?!? And it's feeling *this* well ^^??!? Fantastic EP from these polish guys!

Catchy Punkrock from Australia! Reminds me of Blink182 or Green Day spontaneously, but a little less polished. Sounds like a great Soundtrack for the summer, which seems a bit displaced in the northern hemisphere - but on the other hand, in Australia it's just the end of summer, so in the end this *does* fit perfectly ;-) !

Garganjua - Toward the Sun
listen: https://garganjua.bandcamp.com/album/toward-the-sun
Stoner / Sludge / (Progressive) Doom / Post-Metal
Mostly very athmospheric, so these mostly long songs take their time to develop - but they do excellently!
Perfect record for a sunday afternoon!

BIG SCENIC NOWHERE - Vision Beyond Horizon
info: http://theobelisk.net/obelisk/2020/01/29/big-scenic-nowhere-vision-beyond-horizon-review-stream/

listen: https://heavypsychsoundsrecords.bandcamp.com/album/big-scenic-nowhere-vision-beyond-horizon
I guess you already read all the info above, so what can i add to this "stoner-supergroup"'s latest release?!? Style is very diverse, so basically everyone should be able to find some favourites quickly. On the other hand this also means some of the songs do not kick in this quickly (for me it's, as most of the time: the slow(er) songs). Maybe, if you listen to all of it more often it will all come together after a while, but for now only time will tell. In general it's highly recommended to listen and decide for yourselves!

Suspense Heroes Syndicate - Mary EP
https://www.awayfromlife.com/suspense-heroes-syndicate-mary-7-review-2019/
listen: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_k-hq7HclDNX25ydsJ0qbrZd9vlTB_xstE
Russian Skapunk. Three Songs. Mary is a bit slow, more traditional Ska. The B-Sides are cover versions, more rocky. The version of "Price Tag" is very cool (that was the first thing i heard from this band)!

Orbiter - The Deluge
http://theobelisk.net/obelisk/2020/01/22/orbiter-the-deluge-release/
listen: https://orbiterconnection.bandcamp.com/album/the-deluge
Debut EP of this finnish female-fronted (new vocalist!) doom metal outfit. You need to be in the mood for this and/or generally dig this stuff, but then it's very good and you decide you should keep an eye on this band... ;-)

i guess from now on i don't need to mention anymore that i couldn't listen to everything i'd liked to - because this is simply a chronic problem... ;-)

Albums Of The Week:

2020 releases:

Midnight - Rebirth By Blasphemy
listen: https://midnight-ohio.bandcamp.com/album/rebirth-by-blasphemy
punky metal? metallic punk? deathrock? some also call it black metal and/or speed metal. everybody's correct somehow. in the end that's probably just the soundtrack to extinction of life on earth which humanity deserves!

Thy Catafalque - Naiv
listen: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kQn-_ymsWAx6BKC02jef3SICHGMyeBDGE
"Avant-garde Metal", mostly "black" (some also refer to this as black metal) but also folky/pagan, some (retro?)wave assets, even "industrial" influences, damn, sometimes it's even funky and other times nearly "jazzy". very interesting, progressive stuff!

Antilopen Gang - Abbruch Abbruch
https://www.awayfromlife.com/antilopen-gang-abbruch-abbruch-review-2020/
listen: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nM0nq4ywuvlS2DuURcEV40bv6r_VkCMjE
at first it seems a lot "darker" or "more depressive" than the last album. but after all this is also a pretty diverse album. lyrics range from self-referential to political and last but not least they still are not afraid at all to piss off everyone (the good old "anti alles"-spirit lives on!). no "radio-hit" like "pizza" this time, although from my pov "roboter" would be suitable, but not subtle (or "mindless") enough to be played from your standard-format-hit-radio station.

Also worth mentioning:

2020 releases:

Pisse - s/t LP
https://nerdcore.de/2020/01/24/ein-neues-pisse-album-namens-pisse/
listen: https://pisse.bandcamp.com/album/lp
snotty, rumbling, arty, sometimes wavy lo-fi punk. short tracks (10 in 18 minutes). althought this is really irritating or even strange at first run i already kind of like "CO2 Bilanz" und "Kündigung", so this might be worth a few runs to get used to it ^^.

American Television - Watch It Burn

very nice indie-/emorock! not really inventing anything new, but on the other side also not simply repeating or copying what already has been done.

ok, as i listen to this one while preparing this posting i'll need to sneak this in, too ^^! playful, partly hyperactive blackened posthardcore. definitely worth a recommendation!

Grin - Translucent Blades
listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFBRChMxPvs
heavy psych doom from berlin (EarthShip)! if you like sticky, groovy heavyness this is something for you!

Elder Druid - Golgotha

very sticky/sludgy doom metal, quite good but you need to be in the mood for this...

older releases:

Space Paranoids - High Tales

Sleazy, grungy Stoner/Hard Rock from Italy. Don't invent anything new but they're strong with the boogie! Could definitely spend these 36 Minutes worse ^^

Anti-Flag - 20/20 Vision (2020)

listen: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mWW-UvL8A63JIes-iYaHqFyFFGIpf1npE
anti-fascist hymnic pop punk. nothing unexpected or too fancy - but i still (or "because of that") like this a lot!

Older releases:

Spinners - Operation Breakout
https://idioteq.com/athens-rock-infused-post-hardcore-act-spinners-streaming-new-lp-operation-breakout/
listen: https://spinnersathens.bandcamp.com/album/operation-breakout
As i wouldn't know how to define their style i'll better quote: "influences from late 70s post-punk, 80s underground hardcore, noise rock and 90s alternative rock, and their brand new LP “Operation: Breakout” is a a legitimate one of a kind amalgam of all these styles" and i' add: it's simpy fantastic! My advice: listen to this asap!!!

La Petite Mort/Little Death - Disco
listen: https://lapetitemortlittledeath.bandcamp.com/album/disco
constantly reminds me of "at the drive-in" (could proably add: "without the rocking parts" ^^). nothing you could listen to while you need to focus on something else. great album!

Konny Kleinkunstpunk - Tschö! Nur mutig gelacht und zugebissen!
listen: https://konny-kleinkunstpunk.bandcamp.com/album/tsch-nur-mutig-gelacht-und-zugebissen
political singer/songwriter, reminds me a lot of yok! sadly this is his last release :-/

Also worth mentioning:

2020 releases:

The World/Inferno Friendship Society - All Borders Are Porous To Cats
listen: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_llcBUQ78sWO2LZFrGkzMmduAh0s10sEFA
Couldn't listen very focused, but my impression is "just what was to be expected". TWIFS still know how to make a fantastic album ;-)

Turbostaat - Uthlande
https://www.awayfromlife.com/turbostaat-uthlande-review-2020/
listen: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_koArQLCC9iv5clnodh_tf3kqpQb3e5U_Y
I haven't been a big fan yet, and it seems to stay this way. But if you already have been, this is probably a completely great record. I like that, for this kind of music, it's pretty straightforward. No ballads or even acoustic (singer/songwriter) crap (the last track is an acceptable exception) ^^. Lyrics don't seem to be my peace of cake. Probably also not too "helpful": listening to the GBZ rock'n'roll party immediately before, in this case this album does not seem to be "rocking" at all (while it indeed is) ;-)

WAR FEVER - Waste My Time EP
listen: https://warfever.bandcamp.com/album/waste-my-time-ep
nice hardcorepunk!

DEADYARD - Armageddon It!

2020 releases:

Algiers - There Is No Year
listen: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mi7ZlYuvakU3WTMJvZfnX7Jwr8Cb5HE8o

although there's some nice rhymes, it's basically boooring...

And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead - X The Godless Void and Other Stories
listen: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_n5VCTRvXb4fNz9kcw1FbBigYU8NT6vGqw
when you got not much left to say you try to cover all this hot air with more and more bombastic epicness - i might not be right, but this was pretty boring so i mostly just skipped through the second half... :-(

Oceans - The Sun and the Cold
listen: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kP8dy3Yx7_b1kMZQLyDnybRMD6iBd9AjU
Not sure how/where to categorize, so let's look at what i found from different sources: "Modern Metal (Death Metal, Nu-Metal)" - "Prog Metal / Post Metal" - "Rock" - "Post-Death-Metal"...
none of it completely wrong, but none hits it completely, either ;-)
but apart from "labels", this is simply a fantastic record (if you can stand "metal" at all, i guess ^^)!

The Wild Haze - Strikes and Gutters
info/source: https://www.awayfromlife.com/the-wild-haze-strikes-and-gutters-review-2020/
listen: https://thewildhaze.bandcamp.com/album/strikes-and-gutters
sweeeet pop-punk, a little lofi. the (female) singer's voice is pretty tender and sweet, could almost say sounds like cotton candy. songwriting is very catchy, definitely worth a listen!

Mammock - Itch

https://idioteq.com/itch-greek-progressive-math-noise-rockers-mammock-explain-their-adventurous-record/

"“weird” mixture of post-hardcore with noise rock, eccentric riffage, experimental rhythms, time signatures and dynamics"
i cannot add more words trying to describe. not sure yet if this really already is the Album Of The Year (as described in first link), i guess this needs a few runs to finally decide (or even "understand" this record). definitely worth checking out, if you dare... ;-)

Haest - Anomie
info/source: https://www.awayfromlife.com/haest-mit-neuem-video-und-neuem-album/
listen: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_n4OithiYNZNf74QYv_w2rVnqRTjdxvNZg
i read "doom punk" somewhere, this gives a good idea in which direction this is going. mostly short tracks, pretty diverse for this kind of sound! i like it a lot!

Also worth mentioning:

2020 releases:

Wasted Breath - Wasted Breath
info/source: https://idioteq.com/street-punk-rockers-wasted-breath-deliver-raw-tuneful-lp-on-blackhouse-records/
listen: https://wastedbreathofficial.bandcamp.com/album/wasted-breath
diversified "street punk" ("we play on bills with punk bands, hardcore bands, alternative bands, psychobilly bands"), very interesting! pretty straight-forward, just the way i like it!

Big Spin - Big Spin
listen: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQEOi0zFu_jxx8O_9zyPo52fLE1bnVwja
mexican melodic punk, partly with streetpunk influences, very hymnic. sometimes also nearly hardcorepunk, sometimes skapunk, also a dubby part somewhere - so: very diverse, doesn't get boring!

Apocalyptica - Cell-0
listen: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkdhN1PcFQw9QsN82I2hlHc_6t29Prqbf
somehow i didn't listen to them for a long while, but the first preview singles to this album caught my attention again.
so i cannot compare to the releases before, but i'm not surprised about the sound and album at all. just what was to be expected. instrumental (partly compex) post(?)metal, just with cellos ^^. of course it's best if you take time for this to enjoy.

not sure how exactly these three tracks could be classified. "funny, epic math-grind-party-metal" (like Visions says) is at least an appropriate approximation, i guess ^^. ah, and i really like it ;-)

Ryr - Left Fallow

"Instumental atmospheric Post Metal" fits best, i guess. I was interrupted a few times while listening, sadly - better set and setting advised ;-)
Riffing could probably be a bit more diverse after all, but this is still a very good record! If you'd like to go on a journey for 50 minutes this one is highly recommended!

"Disappointments" of the week:

2020 releases:

Smile And Burn - Morgen anders

first of all: i don't know any of the stuff they did before. poppy german punkrock with quite good lyrics (their first time with german lyrics, as i read). i liked the prereleased songs quite well, but in full length it gets a bit boring. probably because there are also a few (from my pov: too many) slower songs. also, with time the singer's voice is getting more and more annoying...

DeWolff - Tascam Tapes

very cool and lofi retro rock music! in the beginning of the album i was very thrilled, but although this is only half an hour long it somehow gets more and more boring quickly...

reviews2020-02
I realized i still got about a week of music (pure playing time) from last year i did not find time to listen to, yet.
So there's a lot of "older" stuff that still might appear here in the future ^^ - that's why i started "dividing" between this year's releases and "older stuff".

Album(s) Of The Week:

2020releases:
Fake News - Break the Silence
listen: https://fakenewspunk.bandcamp.com/album/break-the-silence-2
Melodic (skate?)punk is not dead ^^! I already liked "EWWWW!" a lot, so this is definitely a recommendation if you also generally like this kind of stuff

Götz Widmann - Tohuwabohu
listen: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kkn1UesVPvQEcfXR2maGmrFp2fq6WYwB8
Some great hits (01, 04, 06, 10, 12), partly a little too melancholic/balladesque for me - but it's right what was to be expected! Götz still at his best :-)

older releases:
Crème Brüllé - Alles auf Anfang
info/source: http://www.bierschinken.net/platten/review.php?id=3881
listen: https://dessertpunx.bandcamp.com/album/alles-auf-anfang
Fast, aggressive Punkrock with great political lyrics - that's exactly the stuff i dig ^^!

BETWEEN BODIES - On Fences

listen: https://betweenbodies.bandcamp.com/album/on-fences-2
absolutely fantastic emo-/indiepunk from cologne! they list Alkaline Trio and Spanish Love Songs as inspiration, so you know where this is heading. i'm already a fan since the first song(s) they released, so definitely worth checking out!

Alms - Act One

referenced as "doom" most of the time, but i'd disaggree! well, not completely. but this is sooo much more! 70s(hard)rock or even "proto-metal" (as in their self description). That's a great record definitely worth listening to!

Hunter Alive - I Decide (2019)
listen: https://hunteraliveofficial.bandcamp.com/album/i-decide
I did not hear anything from them i didn't like (for now), and it's still the same for this album. "Progressive Hardcore" at it's veeery best!

Austerity - Anarcho Punk Dance Party
info/source: https://www.awayfromlife.com/austerity-anarcho-punk-dance-party-review-2019/
listen: https://austeritypunk.bandcamp.com/album/anarcho-punk-dance-party
Comparison to Idles is not wrong at all (although they're a little different), everything is a little "crooked". Political lyrics. To keep it short: if you like Idles you should definitely give this a shot, too!

Also worth mentioning:

older releases:
Vandalismus - Freunde luegen nicht
source/info: https://www.awayfromlife.com/vandalismus-freunde-luegen-nicht-review-2019/
listen: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kMRHWnCSIS0mc5H_p73wAx9NMqvExCpFs
dark, hard and political german rap. great samples, musically a bit minimalistic. more aggressive (or less "whiny") than the "Kummer" album (for example), but still stylisticly comparable.

100blumen - Das Ende (Bandcamp)
info/source: https://www.awayfromlife.com/100blumen-das-ende-review-2019/
listen: https://100blumen.bandcamp.com/album/das-ende
electronic post-punk from düsseldorf. not too "wavy". AFL hit it quite well with their description "egotronic meets boxhamsters". too bad the band takes a break for a while...

"Disappointments" of the week:

2020releases:
Something Dead - Everything is a problem
listen: https://somethingdead.bandcamp.com/album/everything-is-a-problem
"fuzzy punk with traces of hardcore and stonerrock" (self description) is completely correct, and i expected to dig this very hard, but i'm a bit "underwhelmed". Probably too high expecations?
